Question: “Praise the Lord, Brother. Can I pray in tongues while cooking or doing household work?”
The simple answer is yes, but I will explain a little further so that you can understand the subject more clearly.
Take the example of making a phone call. The way you behave during a call often depends on the person you are speaking to and the nature of the conversation.
If you are talking casually with a friend, you can easily stay on call as you continue doing other activities like walking, cooking, and so on.
However, some phone calls are more serious and require your full attention. In such situations, you may even need to sit down with a notebook and take note of the key details being discussed.
Prayer is communication with God, and just like a phone call, speaking to God also applies a similar principle.
Tongues for personal edification
There are times when the tongues you are speaking are mainly for your personal edification. They help strengthen your spirit and build you up internally.
In such moments, there is usually not much spiritual intensity involved. You can comfortably pray in tongues while driving, doing housework, walking on the road, or carrying out other physical activities.
Tongues for spiritual assignment
However, there are other times when the Holy Spirit gives tongues that are connected to a spiritual assignment. This may involve spiritual warfare, interceding for someone, receiving revelation, being taken into a deeper spiritual experience, or being prepared for a special anointing.
In such cases, the spiritual intensity is stronger, and this definitely requires greater focus. If you were doing another physical activity at the same time, that activity could easily be disrupted by the intense spiritual experience.
For example, imagine you are cooking and suddenly begin seeing a vision while praying in tongues. You might close your eyes or have your attention shifted completely. In that situation, you would no longer be able to cook properly, and the food might burn, or something could go wrong in the kitchen.
God understands this. That is why when you are praying in tongues while doing something like cooking, He usually will not release those deeper spiritual experiences at that moment.
Because of this, I usually recommend the following.
Recommendation
It is perfectly fine to pray in tongues while doing other activities.
However, you should also set aside specific times when you pray in tongues without doing anything else. During those moments, you are fully focused on God.
When you dedicate time like that, the Lord knows that if He wants to give you a revelation, or do a deeper spiritual work within you, or lead you into a stronger spiritual encounter, you are available and ready.
So again, there is absolutely no problem with praying in tongues while doing other activities. Just remember to also create moments where you focus solely on praying in tongues so that you can receive the deeper spiritual things that may not happen while you are occupied with other tasks.
God bless you!
