When Your Tongues Shift in The Middle of Praying in Tongues

Someone recently asked me what it means when, during praying in tongues, the tongues suddenly change and the speech becomes more forceful with more prominent syllables. They further added that when this happens, they find themselves raising their arm and pointing in the air.

It is quite common for tongues to vary during prayer. At times, the tongues may shift, while at other times, they remain consistent. Typically, these changes are initiated by the Holy Spirit, as He addresses various matters during our prayers.

There are instances when the Holy Spirit may require a more forceful approach, which can result to aggressive tongues. This heightened intensity often occurs in two specific situations; the first one being when the Holy Spirit guides you to engage in spiritual warfare.

It is possible that there are obstacles or some kind of spiritual opposition that the Holy Spirit is guiding you to pray against. This type of prayer is often referred to as spiritual warfare, and it can result in speaking in tongues with aggression.

The second reason for speaking in tongues aggressively is when making declarations, which can also be a form of spiritual warfare. Based on the aforementioned question, it seems that the Holy Spirit was leading the believer to make a declaration.

This is the reason why the believer found himself lifting up his hand.

It is common to lift up our hands when making declarations, as the Holy Spirit leads us to do so before speaking in aggressive tongues.

These declarations made under the guidance of the Holy Spirit pertain to our lives. You need to understand that the reason behind these declarations is that God can only bring to fruition what has been declared.

The words that we speak carry a lot of weight as described in the book of Proverbs 18:21 which states that the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

The same is echoed by King David in the book of Psalms in a scripture that portrays the power of declarations.

The Lord gave the word; great was the company of those who proclaimed it.

Psalms 68:11

Therefore, when the Holy Spirit senses that God intends to act in your life in a certain way, He prompts you to make that declaration.

This is why God imparts prophecies and words to people, as He can only fulfill what has been declared in their lives.

When a prophecy is given, it becomes a law, as our spoken words hold power. After the prophecy is spoken over your life, you can petition God to fulfill it, as the prophecy is already in place.

Declarations are important and often precede the fulfillment of what was declared.

The next time your tongues shift during prayer, understand that you may be engaging in spiritual warfare or making declarations over your life. I hope this has been helpful. Blessings!

  1. Brother Augustine, what is the relationship between praying in tongues and the fulfillment of promises? Through prayer in tongues, God can accelerate the promises and give us what He promised in a specific and personal way, for example, by giving us a promised house. Thanks
