There are powerful things you get when you speak in tongues. If you are doubting the necessity of speaking in tongues, you need to stick around and learn these things.
For many believers, speaking in tongues is nothing more than a nice gift to have. Even when they are told that speaking in tongues is special, they can’t see how special it is.
I want to share three powerful benefits of speaking in tongues, so you can truly understand how special this gift of the Holy Spirit is.
I hope that this knowledge will drive you to pray in tongues like never before. If you’ve been praying in tongues for a while, I’m sure you must have experienced some of the advantages I’m going to share with you.
Let’s get into it.
1. Speaking to God Directly
Speaking in tongues makes it possible for you to speak to God directly. This is a lot deeper than you imagine. Let me explain…
In the book of 1 Corinthians 14:2, the Bible tells us…
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
When you pray in understanding, both God and other people will hear you. The weakness of that is that people who hear you pray can cast down your faith.
Whether people express their lack of faith openly or keep it to themselves, it still affects your prayer. If you really want maximum faith, you either eliminate faithless people around you or pray in a language they do not understand.
When you pray in tongues, only the Holy Spirit and God understand the prayer. Since the Holy Spirit is the giver of the gift of faith, it means your prayer is made with 100% faith.
Such a prayer goes directly to God because faith is very pleasing to God.
However, I must also mention that sometimes our own unbelief leads us to doubt the very tongues we speak. That is why the Holy Spirit, in many cases, has to conceal that prayer from our understanding as well.
Without the gift of praying in tongues, we would never manage to pray for matters beyond our faith. But with the gift of tongues, we can intercede for matters beyond our faith without doubting.
Isn’t that powerful?
2. Fast Growth in the Spirit
Speaking in tongues accelerates spiritual growth more than you can ever imagine. The Holy Spirit works within you more quickly to transform you when you pray in the Spirit.
The Bible tells of an interesting encounter in Acts 19:4-6. This is what it says…
Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
Apostle Paul met a group of people who only believed in the baptism of John the Baptist. That was the baptism of repentance from sin. It is the most basic step in the journey of salvation.
Then he led them to be baptized in the name of Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit.
What is amazing about this story is the speed at which these people went from barely knowing Jesus to receiving Him and getting the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
When the Holy Spirit came upon them, He accelerated their spiritual growth by leading them to speak in tongues and prophesy.
Speaking in tongues is a gift given to us to commune with God directly. You don’t easily get to that level in the spirit. But by the power of the Holy Spirit, He gives you the gift of tongues, and instantly you can commune directly with God.
Isn’t that beautiful?
3. Approval of your Faith in Jesus
Speaking in tongues approves your faith in Jesus.
How? You may ask. Well, let me explain…
In the book of Mark 16:17-18, the Bible says…
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
We know speaking in tongues as a gift from the Holy Spirit. That is true. But do you know that when you receive the gift of tongues, you directly fulfill one of the promises Jesus said would follow those who believe in Him?
Jesus mentioned a number of signs that would follow those who would believe in Him. Speaking with new tongues was one of the signs.
And when you think deeply about it, we perform all miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit. We also cast out evil spirits by the power of the Holy Spirit. And what more do we do by the power of the Holy Spirit?
You got it…We speak in tongues by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Now you understand why Jesus would put speaking with new tongues as a sign of believing in Him, together with casting out evil spirits, laying hands on the sick to recover, and so on?
If you pray in tongues regularly, you will notice that your faith in Jesus increases drastically. It becomes very easy to love Him, obey Him, and believe in Him.
