3 Ways Speaking in Tongues Helps You Overcome Sin

Speaking in tongues is a powerful gift from the Holy Spirit that helps us overcome sin. If you understand how praying in tongues eradicates sin, you will know how to align yourself to remove all sin from your life.

Some praying-in-tongues believers struggle with sin despite having the gift of the Holy Spirit. This happens because they fail to understand how to align themselves so that the tongues they speak can save them from sin.

Today, I’m going to explain how you can use the gift of tongues to uproot sin out of your life. It is one of the primary roles of the gift of tongues in our lives.

I have walked the journey of battling sin with the gift of tongues. I understand how stubborn sin can be. But trust me, speaking in tongues has the power to break every bondage of sin.

I hope this information helps you overcome every form of sin if you are struggling with any.

Let’s dive in…

1. Remembering Hidden Sins

Have you ever started praying in tongues then remembered some sinful things you did?

The Holy Spirit often reminds us of the sins we’ve committed so that we repent of them. This is slightly different from cases where the devil tries to condemn you for what you’ve done.

When the devil reminds you of your sin, he does it to take away your confidence. In many cases, those are usually sins you’ve already repented of.

But when the Holy Spirit is reminding you of sins so that you repent of them, He brings them to you in a loving way.

In such circumstances, you are expected to repent of the sins that you remember. The Holy Spirit brings the sins to our attention because we can’t access God’s holy presence when we are defiled with sin.

Sometimes we overlook our own sin or simply forget. With that sin in place, the devil can use it to drain our faith in prayer.

For that reason, the Holy Spirit alerts us of the sin so that we repent of it.

The Bible calls this type of sin ‘secret sin’. King David mentioned them in Psalms 19:12. This is what he said…

Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.

Knowing this kind of sin is never easy. But when you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit will bring them to your attention.

2. Purity Conviction

When you are dirty and already defiled with sin, indulging in more sin feels normal. But when you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit purifies you, and you start seeing sin as defiling.

Have you ever prayed in tongues and soaked in the spirit to a point that you felt some resistance to sin?

Well, that happens quite a lot. One of the common ways is when the Holy Spirit holds back your tongue from speaking obscene things. No matter how much you want to speak some words, you just can’t.

The Holy Spirit knows that you need to be pure to access God. When you pray in tongues, He purifies you, including your tongue.

Once you are pure, He puts in place measures to prevent you from defiling yourself again.

Things that carnal people see as normal, to you, they seem very gross. The Holy Spirit makes sure you feel the filthiness of sin so that you avoid it.

In some way, it is the Holy Spirit making it very clear to your senses what is good and what is evil. At that point, you don’t have to ask if something is wrong; you just feel it.

Jesus mentioned this specific role of the Holy Spirit in John 16:8. This is what He said…

‘And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:’

The Holy Spirit makes it clear to us what is regarded as sin and what is righteous. That distinction goes a long way in helping us avoid what is sinful. Also, He makes sure we are aware of God’s judgement if we give in to sin. Those warnings are very powerful in terms of helping us stay away from sin.

3. Self-Control

We all know that self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. But when you think about it deeply, you realize something very interesting.

You see, we are so bad at stopping ourselves from sin to the point that God had to send the Holy Spirit to teach us how to control ourselves.

How many times have you fallen into sin even when you clearly knew it was wrong? You even wrestled with the idea, yet still gave in.

What makes it even more surprising is that after falling into sin, you hated yourself for giving in to the sin.

Well, that is a clear example of knowing sin but lacking self-control to resist it. Those are two different things.

Believers who read God’s law but don’t commune with the Holy Spirit experience this a lot. Yes, you know what is sinful, but you don’t have the power to resist it.

When we pray in tongues, we yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit. By yielding ourselves to the Holy Spirit, we give Him the chance to deposit His power in us.

That power of the Holy Spirit is what we use to resist sin. Unlike what many believers think, sin is so strong that only the power of the Holy Spirit can make you resist it.

Anyone who doesn’t get the power of the Holy Spirit is at the mercy of sin, just as Proverbs 25:28 tells us. Here is what it says…

“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.”

Conclusion

If you are struggling with sin and you have the gift of tongues, I believe this knowledge has been beneficial. Yield more to the Holy Spirit as you pray in tongues that He may help you overcome sin.

It was for your sake that I did this teaching. I also do live praying-in-tongues sessions on YouTube every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in case you need motivation to pray. I do all this because praying in tongues changed my life, and I know it can change the lives of many others.
