Praying in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit. We use it to commune with God, but it also helps us win spiritual battles. When you understand how effective praying in tongues can be in spiritual warfare, you will understand why the devil fights it so much.
Many praying-in-tongues believers underestimate the power of the tongues they speak. Some of them go so far as to question whether their tongues are real at all.
Little do they know that they have a powerful weapon from the Holy Spirit to win all spiritual battles.
Today, I’m going to explain three ways the Holy Spirit helps us win spiritual battles through the gift of speaking in tongues.
I’ve experienced all three powerful ways the Holy Spirit uses the gift of speaking in tongues to help us win battles. That is why I’m sharing this information with you.
I hope this knowledge will help you be charged up to pray in the spirit like never before.

1. Supernatural Strength
Have you ever prayed in tongues and felt a surge of energy? Have you ever started off praying in tongues in a low tone only to find yourself blasting out tongues?
Have you ever felt strong anger within as you prayed in tongues and didn’t know where it was coming from?
Well, all the three experiences are a result of the supernatural strength that the Holy Spirit gives us when we pray in tongues.
When we pray in tongues, we align ourselves with the Holy Spirit. We become as strong as He is. Our boldness matches His boldness, and we get angry at the enemy as He is.
The result is that we fight the enemy with the power and courage of the Holy Spirit. Though it is spiritual, it is so strong that we feel it physically as well.
Our physical strength is nowhere near the strength required to fight the enemy. The enemy is very discouraging, and that discouragement draws our strength in the spiritual realm.
Physically, that feels like a complete lack of desire to pray. Some believers ask, “Why don’t I have any strength to pray?”
That happens because the enemy has stolen their strength. The Holy Spirit helps us by supplying the strength we need to pray.
A good Biblical example that proves the Holy Spirit gives us strength to fight is from the book of Judges 14:5-6. This is what the Bible says…
So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
We are never told anything about Samson’s workout routine. Whether he had it or not, we don’t know. However, we are told a young lion came roaring at him. We are also told the Holy Spirit came upon him mightily.
The result was a complete massacre of the lion. Think of it; the Holy Spirit gave a human being enough strength and courage to tear apart a lion without using any weapons.
2. Prophetic Knowledge
Have you ever had a very strong conviction come upon you in the middle of praying in tongues? Or have you ever had knowledge about something, and you couldn’t explain how you knew it?
Well, those are some of the ways the Holy Spirit gives us prophetic knowledge. That knowledge is usually deposited in your spirit.
When you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit helps you pay attention to your spirit. Because your spirit has more knowledge than your mind, all of a sudden, you know things, and can’t explain how you knew them.
The convictions you get are caused by your spirit wanting to do certain things or avoid certain things based on the knowledge it has received from the Holy Spirit.
If that knowledge has not been relayed to your mind yet, you will not understand why you have that conviction, but you will feel the conviction because you are in tune with your spirit.
If you are obedient to the convictions, you save yourself from the schemes of the enemy.
A good example is from 2 Kings 6:8-12. The Bible says…
Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.” And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.” Then the king of Israel sent someone to the place of which the man of God had told him. Thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice.
Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”
And one of his servants said, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”
By the help of the Holy Spirit, Elisha was hearing the conversation of the King of Syria about their plan to attack Israel and he would report it to the King of Israel.
That simple move would render all the plans of the Syrians useless.
That’s how the Holy Spirit can give you prophetic knowledge that renders the plans of the enemy useless.
3. Prophetic Acts
Have you ever prayed in tongues and found yourself moving your hands involuntarily? Or have you ever found yourself taking strange postures when praying in tongues?
Well, those are examples of how the Holy Spirit leads you to do prophetic acts. Those hand motions and strange postures have deep spiritual meaning.
Here is how they work.
For you to have any impact in the spiritual realm, you need faith. And as we are told, faith without action is dead.
When the Holy Spirit uses our mouths to make spiritual declarations, that is faith, but it has no actions. If those declarations require our faith for them to be fulfilled, the Holy Spirit prompts us to carry out these acts to establish our faith.
That is how the prophetic acts you experience when praying in the spirit are born.
In the case of spiritual warfare, we need to show that we have faith in God for Him to fight for us. That is why the Holy Spirit leads us to do prophetic acts such as moving our hands while waging war in the spirit.
A good example is from the book of Exodus 17:8-11. This is what the Bible says…
Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
When Moses held up the rod of God in his hand, it was an act of faith that the Lord would fight for them. Because of his faith, God would help Israel crush the Amalekites.
But when he lowered the rod of God in his hand, Amalek would prevail because at that point, Israel was fighting with their own strength.
Why would an old man with a rod on a hill have such a tremendous impact in a battle? It was the prophetic nature of the act that made it the deciding factor in the battle.
