Is Praying in Tongues Enough?

I want to address something I see many people comment about, but I do not agree with. It concerns the idea that praying in tongues alone is not enough.

They suggest that for it to be effective, it must always be balanced with other spiritual activities, such as reading the Bible, working on one’s character, and charity, and so on.

Now, while these things are important, people often forget that the Holy Spirit is the One who leads us to pray in tongues.

And if He is leading you into it, He is fully aware of everything else you need, including character development, growth in scripture, and every other aspect of salvation.

The Holy Spirit knows your assignment

God created each person with a purpose and a specific assignment. You are not called to fulfill every assignment; only the one God has given you.

When you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit intercedes for you according to that divine assignment.

He begins shaping you into the person God created you to be. He molds your character, refines your heart, and directs your steps according to God’s design.

If the Holy Spirit wants you to grow in scripture, He will lead you to read the Word. If He wants you to serve the poor, evangelize, reconcile with someone, or give generously, He will prompt you.

Also, spending a lot of time praying in tongues does not make you a lazy believer. The Holy Spirit still guides you and empowers you to live a fruitful and productive life.

He knows what you need and when you need it.

So, there is no reason to fear that praying in tongues ‘too much’ without doing other things will somehow make you an unbalanced believer.

My Personal Experience

There was a time when I struggled with this issue myself. I would hear people say, “You must pray in tongues, but you must also do this and that.”

To be honest, praying in tongues was the only thing I could do consistently at the time. I struggled even to read the Bible and would fall asleep while reading scriptures.

One day, I made a decision to focus on praying in tongues and see what happens. What followed surprised me.

As I prayed deeply and consistently, the Holy Spirit began reminding me of scriptures. After prayer, I would feel a strong desire to go and read them. I began reading the bible more naturally, not out of pressure, but out of hunger.

Then compassion began to grow in me. I felt moved to help people, evangelize, serve, and give. These desires were not forced; they flowed from prayer.

The Holy Spirit worked on my heart first, and everything else followed.

The Real Issue: Obedience

The problem is not praying in tongues. The problem arises when people pray but ignore the Holy Spirit’s instructions.

The Holy Spirit is the perfect Teacher. Every preacher and teacher only teaches by His grace. If you give Him room in your life, He will instruct you. But once He instructs you, it becomes your responsibility to obey.

If He convicts you to apologize, then apologize. If He leads you to read a scripture, read it. If He stirs you to evangelize, go and do it.

I have come to understand that disobedience is the reason why some tongue-speaking believers do not reflect the character and the glory of God in their lives.

Praying in tongues opens the door, but obedience completes the work.

No Need for Guilt

Many believers feel guilty, as if praying in tongues alone is not enough. However, when you yield to the Holy Spirit, He will lead you in every other necessary area of growth.

Praying in tongues is one of the most powerful ways to allow the Holy Spirit to speak and intercede for you.

Even if your life feels disordered or messy, begin there. Pray. Soak deeper in tongues. Let Him work on your heart and mind. And you will have the desire to do what is right.

I can attest to this because when I focused on praying in tongues, I began to grow in all areas of my life. In fact, this ministry was birthed from praying in tongues.

Summary

Pray in tongues without guilt or hesitation. The Holy Spirit will take care of everything else. Trust Him, for He is a faithful teacher who knows how to lead you step by step into the life God has ordained for you.

So, pray, yield, and obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. God bless you!
