Discouraging voices and a wandering mind is something that is quite common among tongue-speaking believers, especially those who are still new in the gift,
These discouraging voices do not come from God; they come from the enemy. The aim is to discourage you and eventually stop you from praying in tongues.
This mainly happens when a believer is still developing confidence and faith in praying in tongues.
When you reach a level where you fully believe in the power and value of praying in tongues, the enemy’s resistance becomes futile and he eventually withdraws.
But when the devil senses doubt or uncertainty, he persists in trying to discourage you.
These discouraging voices usually come in two ways.
Doubtful thoughts
First, they may come as thoughts while you are praying, causing you to question yourself.
Many people interpret this as their own doubts, not realizing that these thoughts are actually planted by evil spirits to undermine their confidence during prayer.
You may find yourself questioning whether your tongues are real or at the very least impactful, yet these doubts are not from you. They are spiritual interference.
Discouragement through people
Second, discouragement may come through people around you who are not spiritually sensitive or not fully born again.
Evil spirits may influence such people to speak negative words, such as telling you that praying in tongues is pointless or meaningless.
In these two cases, the enemy disguises himself either as your own thoughts or through others.
To overcome this, affirm your faith boldly. Declare that your tongues are from the Holy Spirit.
Speak words of faith such as: “These tongues are a gift from God. I am speaking the mysteries of God. This is a gift from God and I believe in what I am doing.”
When you make such declarations, the enemy retreats, and praying in tongues becomes easier and more joyful.
Seasoned believers who have grown strong in praying in tongues rarely experience these discouraging voices, except during moments of emotional weakness.
Over time, as your faith increases, these attacks significantly reduce.
Wandering Thoughts During Prayer
Wandering thoughts often come when discouraging voices fail. The enemy then shifts strategy by flooding your mind with worries, problems, and distractions, hoping to discourage and disrupt your focus.
The ultimate goal remains the same, to stop you from praying.
This becomes mostly happens when a believer is going through a difficult time. When peace is lacking, the mind naturally struggles to stay focused.
This is why the Holy Spirit naturally bring desires to bring peace, and order to all areas of our lives, so that we may pray effectively.
Jesus Himself taught us not to worry because He understood that anxiety divides our attention and weakens our communion with God.
Solution to a wandering mind
If your mind wanders frequently, a practical solution is to shorten your prayer intervals.
Instead of praying for 30 minutes straight, divide it into three sessions of 10 minutes, with short breaks for reading Scripture. This approach improves your focus and gradually trains your mind to remain attentive for longer periods.
This is something I personally practiced when I started praying in tongues for longer than usual. When I first attempted to pray in tongues for 3 hours straight, I really struggled to stay focused especially from the second hour.
This is when I decided to section the prayer session into an hour or an hour and a half till I was done with the 3 hours. It worked perfectly.
The more you train yourself like this, your spiritual stamina grows, and so does your ability to pray for extended periods without distractions.
Over time, you may find yourself praying for two or three hours with deep focus and clarity.
Conclusion
Discouraging voices and wandering thoughts often come during prayer, especially when praying in tongues.
These are subtle tactics meant to weaken your faith and focus but as you continue to grow in the Spirit, they become less effective.
Stay faithful, stay encouraged, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead the way. God bless you!
