Your thirst to pray in the spirit depends on a few key factors. If you understand the factors, you will be in a prime position to ensure your fire to pray in tongues never goes out.
For many praying-in-tongues believers, their desire to pray in the spirit is down to chance. On some days, they have the drive to pray. On other days, they have no desire to pray, and they don’t know what to do.
I’ll explain the factors that affect your hunger to pray in the spirit and measures you should take to ensure your fire to pray in the spirit never goes out.
I have the gift of praying in tongues, and I have been exercising it for a good number of years. Over the years, I studied the gift to get the best out of it. These are some of the very important lessons I have learned that have helped me grow in this gift and kept me on fire for God.
1. Testimony of other Believers
Praying in tongues is a gift that heavily relies on faith. When you pray in the spirit, you are speaking to God. And can you speak to God without faith? Of course you can’t.
That is where the testimony of other believers comes in. Hearing other people’s testimony is a major building block of faith. It is the ‘if they did it, I can do it too’ effect.
With strong faith, you will prevail over the powers of darkness that discourage you from praying in the spirit. Isn’t that what the book of Revelation 12:11 tells us? Here is what it says…
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.
If the devil can’t convince you to denounce Christ and godliness because your faith is strong, you have won.
The devil is notorious for sending doubtful thoughts to believers who pray in tongues. Many of them start doubting if their praying in tongues is effective.
But if you have strong faith built on the testimony of other believers, it will be easy to prevail over the doubts that the enemy throws at you.
I have done my best to share my praying in tongues testimonies to encourage as many believers as I can to pray in the spirit. That is a sure way to ensure your fire to pray in the spirit never goes out.
If you are not already utilizing the testimonies of other tongues-speaking believers to boost your own faith in the gift of tongues, it is time you start. It will build your resilience in the gift such that the devil won’t be able to stop you from praying.
2. Lifestyle of Purity
One of the fastest ways to kill your gift of praying in tongues is to engage in sin. When you live a sinful lifestyle, it becomes difficult for the Holy Spirit to operate in your life.
Because it is the Holy Spirit who empowers us to pray in the Spirit, if you frustrate Him, you will have a difficult time praying in the Spirit.
The devil understands these dynamics, and that is why he lures praying in tongues believers to indulge in sin.
See what the book of Isaiah 59:1-2 says…
Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.
Sin separates you from God. And what is praying in tongues if you cannot access God? It will be the most boring experience you’ve ever undertaken since coming out of your mother’s womb.
But when you maintain a lifestyle of purity, the Holy Spirit finds it easy to work in your life. With more power from the Holy Spirit, praying in tongues becomes very easy.
At the same time, the devil won’t have anything to use in his discouragement tactics against you. You will pray in the spirit unhindered.
Therefore, if you are not already living a pure life, it is time you take it seriously if you want to make your fire of praying in the spirit unquenchable.
3. Overflow of love
Praying in tongues is a language. With that being the case, it means it is subject to the love you have for God.
If you love God, you will want to speak to Him more, and you will have a lot of things to share with Him. But if your love for God is faint, your praying in tongues will also be faint.
In fact, the greatest fruit that can come out of praying in tongues is love. Apostle Paul mentioned this in 1 Corinthians 13:1, which says..
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
The more you pray in the spirit, the more your love for God and people increases. That is the only way you will feel your praying in tongues effort is not in vain.
The passion you have for God will drive you to burn with the desire to spend time in His holy presence by praying in the Spirit. At the same time, the love you have for other people will move you to intercede for them in the spirit.
That love and passion are what will keep your praying in tongues fire burning.
Therefore, if your love for God is not strong, it is time to work on it so that your praying in tongues experience becomes sweet.
If you don’t love other people, it is time to pray for the grace to love them so that your praying in tongues effort bears fruit.
If you do that, be sure your fire to pray in the Spirit will never go out.
