Written tongues are considered one of the spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit, yet it remains relatively unknown to many. It requires a high level of faith and deep spiritual understanding to manifest this gift.
The Holy Spirit guides people to write in tongues, as was the case with my own experience. I have written in tongues only once, while seeking confirmation from God that it was indeed possible for me to write in tongues.
However, I have interpreted written tongues from other believers on multiple occasions, which has made me quite familiar with this phenomenon.
The first thing that caught my attention regarding written tongues was during my time in a fellowship where we prayed in tongues. There were many spiritual manifestations including writing in tongues.
The first instance I witnessed people seemingly writing in tongues, was when they were speaking in tongues while making gestures in the air. It appeared as though they were writing with their fingers in the air.
A few believers were able to interpret these signs, which reminded me of the story of Zachariah, the father of John the Baptist in Luke 1: 20-25. You may recall the incident when he was offering sacrifices in his priestly division, and an angel appeared to him, delivering the message of the birth of his son, John the Baptist.
Zachariah doubted the message and God took away his speech. He communicated through signs until the birth of John the Baptist. The Bible records that people interpreted these signs, recognizing that he had indeed encountered a vision.
Still in the fellowship gathering, some people would lie down and begin to write on the floor. The writing was not visible, as it consisted of making gestures or signs on the floor. Those able to interpret the tongues would observe and understand the message being conveyed.
This experience reminded me of the writing on the wall during the time of Daniel, and the king sought the interpretation of the words.
Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote.
Daniel 5:5
When Daniel was summoned, he successfully interpreted the prophecy, which foretold that the kingdom had been measured, weighed, and found wanting, and would be given over to others. This prophecy came to pass.
My experience with written tongues
Fascinated by the ability of others to write in tongues, I prayed to God for a similar experience. One day, while praying in tongues, I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to pick up a book and a pen and start writing.
As I held the pen, my hand felt light and began to shake. It was as if someone was guiding my hand, which I believe was the Holy Spirit. I ended up writing in tongues, guided by a force beyond myself.
During that period, I was writing in tongues without interpreting them, so I couldn’t understand what I had written. When I started interpreting other people’s tongues, I tried to find the book to interpret my own writings, but I never found it.
I have also interpreted several tongues that were written down in a book. Some believers take a pen and a notebook and begin to write down what they are experiencing when caught up in the Holy Spirit.
These written expressions may appear as drawings or childlike doodles. The Holy Spirit has given me the gift of interpreting these written expressions.
In one instance, a written-tongue presented to me for interpretation included sketches depicting a river, a mountain, and what seemed to be the wing of an angel which appeared over doodles.
Although these elements were not immediately recognizable as drawings, the Holy Spirit granted me the ability to perceive the pattern of the river, mountain, and the angel’s wing.
These symbols represented the presence of God, confirming the fulfillment of the believer’s desire for intimacy with God. Interpreting the written words was more challenging than the drawings, but the Holy Spirit provided me with the interpretation of what was written as well.
From my experience, I’ve found written tongues easier to interpret than spoken ones.
Additionally, written tongues can be preserved, even if they were written days or weeks before. People started coming to me to interpret their tongues once they learned that I could do so, and I provided them with the interpretations.
If you cannot interpret your written tongues, the Lord will guide you to someone who will be able to interpret the tongues on your behalf.
It is important to recognize that when God speaks to you, the Holy Spirit may lead you to write in tongues. This is a gift of the Holy Spirit, and as a believer who prays in tongues, you should be open to receiving it.
When you feel the urge to write down or make gestures while praying in tongues, understand that the Holy Spirit is guiding you and do as instructed. It may seem strange, but it is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit.
Trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit and be open to this unique form of communication from God. Blessings!
