At the most basic level, praying in tongues is made up of syllables. These are the sounds you speak when you pray. On the surface, those syllables seem very simple. Sometimes they even feel repetitive, as if nothing serious is really happening.
The truth is that a lot is going on in the spirit, even when the tongues don’t sound as impressive.
In this article, I will explain these syllables and how they work, especially for believers who are still growing in the gift of praying in tongues.
Why Tongues Often Start with Few Syllables
One important thing to take note of is that the syllables you speak in tongues change as you grow. In the beginning, it’s very normal to only have a few syllables. Many people find themselves repeating the same sounds over and over again.
This is actually where a lot of doubt comes in. People start wondering, “Am I really praying in tongues, or am I just repeating sounds?” It can feel like you’re making it up.
But praying in tongues is like learning any other language. When you first start speaking in tongues, the Holy Spirit gives you a few syllables and allows you to repeat them again and again.
The reason is simple; It’s a new language, and the sounds don’t come naturally to us.
That’s also why many people initially feel shy or even afraid to pray in tongues out loud. It takes time to build confidence. The Holy Spirit understands this, so He starts by helping you get comfortable with the syllables before taking you deeper.
In those early stages, the syllables may not feel very significant, but their main purpose is to help you build your faith as you get more familiar with speaking in tongues. So, if your tongues repeat a lot in the beginning, that is completely normal.
However, if the same syllables keep repeating for six months or more with no change, it could be a sign of stagnation. Over time, you should expect flowing tongues with a wider variety of syllables.
How Tongues Become More Diverse
So, how do tongues actually become more diverse? The Holy Spirit is the one who gives the syllables, but your response matters. What He often looks at is your level of faith and the passion you have when you pray.
If you’ve been praying with only a few syllables and you desire more, one of the simplest things you can do is pray in tongues more boldly.
Some people pray very quietly or timidly because they’re unsure or afraid. But when you raise your voice and pray with more intensity, you will notice that your tongues will become more diverse.
Speed of tongues
Another thing you’ll notice is the speed of tongues. In the initial days, tongues are usually slow. There are pauses and even moments of hesitation.
But as you continue praying, fluency increases naturally. As tongues become more diverse, they also become faster and smoother.
Some people experience this almost immediately, especially those who already have a deep hunger for God and an open heart.
At higher levels, tongues can even become so fast that your tongue can’t keep up. That’s when people may start groaning, crying, shouting, shaking, or making sounds that feel more like vibrations than clear syllables.
Becoming Less Conscious of the Syllables
In the early days of speaking in tongues, many people tend to be very conscious of what they’re saying. They notice repetition of sounds and end up overthinking about their tongues. This often creates doubt.
However, as your faith grows, tongues begin to feel more natural. You stop paying attention to individual syllables, and eventually, they just flow. At higher levels, you may even forget that you’re praying in tongues because it happens effortlessly.
When you surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit, His energy sustains the prayer. That’s why people can pray in tongues for hours and still feel refreshed afterward.
Growing Deeper in the Gift
If you’re not sure how to grow deeper, start by simply asking. Pray and tell the Holy Spirit that you want to grow in this gift. Ask Him to lead you into deeper tongues.
When you express that desire sincerely, the Holy Spirit stirs passion within you, and that passion naturally produces smoother, deeper, and more enjoyable tongues. Over time, what once felt awkward begins to feel completely natural.
There is always a learning curve in the beginning, but growth comes with faith, boldness, and surrender. God bless you!
