Praying in tongues is a sweet gift from the Holy Spirit. A lot happens when you pray in tongues, most of which you may never know. However, two things are very common anytime you soak in tongues more than usual.
I have experienced both of them numerous times, and I think it is important for you to know them. If you are aware of them, at least you won’t panic when you experience them. If you’re not aware, you may actually panic and even stop praying in tongues.
The first time I experienced these two things, I had a difficult time understanding what was going on. It terrified me so much that I had to isolate myself for several days.
I thought I was developing a mental problem, but when I finally understood everything, I realized that I had tapped into a deep spiritual level that I had never been to before.
So, what happens when you decide to pray in tongues and soak deeply in the Spirit more than usual?
Heightened sensitivity
First, you become very sensitive. This sensitivity comes in two ways: spiritually and physically.
Most believers assume that praying in tongues only makes you sensitive in the spirit, but it actually makes you sensitive physically as well.
Becoming sensitive is not a problem, but the challenge comes in certain circumstances.
Let me explain.
A lot happens in our lives that we are not aware of. For example, you never fully know how your words affect strangers. You also don’t know most of the things people discuss about you.
As a result, you assume your words don’t affect others that much, and that people don’t discuss you often. However, that is never the case.
What happens is that your sensitivity is usually low, which means you don’t perceive deeper details.
But all that changes when you pray in tongues and soak deeply in the Spirit.
When you become sensitive, you are suddenly able to perceive more details from your day-to-day activities than you normally would.
Spiritually, you may begin to feel the presence of heavenly beings, as well as evil spirits around you. That is when you realize that you are constantly surrounded by spiritual beings. This can be very scary and troubling, especially if you are not prepared for it.
Many believers desire spiritual encounters, but sensing spiritual beings around you is not as rosy as some assume.
We have seen examples in Scripture where people were terrified when angels appeared to them, even when bringing good news. How much more overwhelming would it be to sense evil beings with harmful intentions?
This increased sensitivity can cause reactions that seem unusual, and others may even interpret them as madness, which can make things even more stressful.
Simple things, like seeing a beggar on the street, may suddenly feel overwhelming.
Normally, your suppressed sensitivity doesn’t allow you to feel the depth of pain that God feels for the beggar. But when you pray in tongues and become highly sensitive, you feel deep compassion, sometimes to the point of tears.
Remember what happened to Jesus in Matthew 9:36: ‘But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.’
Reading such scriptures may also move you deeply, because you begin to experience the sorrow that Jesus felt.
When this heightened sensitivity persists, you may feel so drained that you begin to feel physically sick. You might lose your appetite, struggle to sleep, and even start longing to be with the Lord more than to remain and witness the pain of this world.
In that state, scriptures like Isaiah 53:3 begin to make profound sense.
‘He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.’
Access to deeper insight
Secondly, when you soak deep in tongues, you may begin to receive more information than usual, both spiritual and practical.
Earlier, I mentioned that you never fully know how your words affect people. In this state, you may begin to see more clearly how your words have affected others, sometimes causing you to regret things you said.
At the same time, you become aware of exactly what people discuss about you.
At very high levels, you will be like Jesus, who knew the thoughts of people, as the book of Matthew 9:4 tells us.
‘Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?’
Unfortunately, people’s thoughts are often sinful, which means having to endure knowing the evil things your loved ones think about.
When you fall asleep, your dreams will be detailed accounts of your life that pierce your heart like a sword. If your friend secretly lives a sinful life, it will be revealed to you in clear detail, and obviously, it makes your friendship awkward going forward.
On top of that, you receive information about the future without asking for it. Random future events are revealed to you to the point that you don’t know exactly what to do other than cry.
On one hand, you feel privileged to have deep, detailed information that normal people don’t have, but at the same time, the information overwhelms you.
When you pray and ask God what to do, He gives you scriptures like Ecclesiastes 1:18.
‘For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.’
In all that, you will understand why the return of Christ is an event to long for. When you understand the true misery of life under the sun, you will feel like telling Jesus to come quickly, only to realize that He actually says He is coming quickly Revelation 22:20.
‘He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.’
Conclusion
Praying in tongues is a beautiful gift of the Holy Spirit, but just be aware that it will expose you to information that will make you want to go to be with the Lord as soon as possible.
Though this may sound gloomy, it is actually a beautiful thing.
As much as it makes you detest life under the sun, it makes you desire to be with the Lord like never before. You will also begin to notice that the Lord desires for us to long for Him more than for this life.
Lastly, God often regulates how much we can experience when we pray in tongues because we are not aware of what awaits us.
But now that you know, even roughly, what you may experience when you soak deeply in tongues, the Lord may be more willing to let you experience deeper things.
Grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
