When Your Head Feels Heavy While Praying in Tongues| Learning Stage

Recently, someone asked me why their head becomes heavy when they pray in tongues for an extended period of time. They described it as feeling as though something large is resting on their head.

This is something many tongue-speaking believers experience, and it often happens during what I call the learning stage.

When a believer receives the Holy Spirit, the first thing the Holy Spirit does is take them through deliverance. This process involves cleansing and setting a person free from oppression and the bondages that once held them captive.

After deliverance, the believer now enters the learning stage where the Holy Spirit begins teaching and preparing them for their ministry and calling.

Part of that process includes anointing and equipping the person.

The equipping process

When the Holy Spirit equips you spiritually, you may sometimes feel it physically. Some people may feel heat, others a noticeable heaviness or weight, and others different sensations in their bodies.

These experiences are not random; they often correspond to what the Holy Spirit is doing spiritually.

If you feel weight on your head, it can be connected to an anointing related to teaching, preaching, or sharing knowledge. Much of that ministry flows from the mind and the head.

In the same way that scripture in Ephesians 6: 10-18 speaks of spiritual armor (the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the helmet of salvation), the Holy Spirit equips your spirit with what you need for your assignment.

As that equipping takes place, you may sense the “weight” of it.

You may not notice these things when you are not praying in tongues because praying in tongues heightens your spiritual sensitivity.

The longer you pray, the more sensitive your spirit becomes, and the more aware you are of what the Holy Spirit is doing within you.

For example, people called into healing ministries often feel sensations in their hands, such as heat, stiffness, or weight. This is because healing frequently flows through the laying on of hands.

In the same way, if you feel something concentrated on your head, it may be connected to a teaching or preaching calling.

You may not yet fully understand what the anointing is for, because you are still in the learning stage. But as you continue praying and growing, the Holy Spirit will reveal more about your calling.

I remember when I was in that stage, I was almost always the last person to finish praying during prayer meetings. I often wondered why others seemed ready to stop while I felt like I needed more time.

I did not understand at that time that the Holy Spirit was preparing me for a ministry of prayer. As I continued growing, it became clear that those long seasons of prayer were part of my training.

So, if you experience a heavy sensation on your head while praying in tongues, it may be a sign that the Holy Spirit is anointing and equipping you in preparation for your divine assignment.

God bless you!
