Staying Focused While Praying for A Specific Matter in Tongues

Recently, someone left a question asking about staying focused while praying in tongues. The question was whether it is possible to use a picture while praying. For example, having a photo of someone on your phone and praying in tongues while looking at the photo to stay focused, especially when interceding for them.

I would say yes, that is something you can do. The Holy Spirit can work with you through such actions to help you stay focused while interceding for a particular person.

Focus is one of the most critical aspects of effective praying in tongues, and in this article, I will take a deep dive into how to stay focused when praying in tongues.

Faith and action

The first thing you need to understand is that staying focused involves two parts: faith and action.

The faith part is internal and spiritual, and sometimes difficult to explain in words. The action part, however, is practical and something you can actually do.

The faith may remain the same, but the actions that accompany that faith can vary. This is why different people suggest different ways to remain focused while praying in tongues.

The action you choose is often a personal choice, but God looks primarily at the faith behind it. As scripture teaches us in James 2:17, faith without action is dead, so the two must work together.

Practical ways to stay focused

In the past, when I guided people in praying in tongues, I sometimes suggested practical actions to help them remain focused.

For example, if someone wanted to experience God’s love, I would advise them to read scriptures about love, such as Jeremiah 31:3, where God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

This helped their minds stay aligned with the spiritual theme they were praying about.

Another method I sometimes suggested was playing worship songs that match the prayer focus. For example, if someone was engaging in spiritual warfare, they could play worship songs related to victory or spiritual battle.

If they were praying about repentance or forgiveness, they could listen to songs about mercy and forgiveness.

They could also read scriptures related to the topic and meditate on them while praying in tongues.

Why the mind needs guidance

Scripture tells us that when we pray in tongues, our minds are unfruitful. Our natural minds are carnal and tend to focus on physical things rather than spiritual things.

Because of this, an idle mind can easily become a target for distracting or discouraging thoughts. Someone may be praying in tongues and receiving a revelation from God, but then a thought comes saying, “Those are just your own thoughts.” That doubt may cause them to reject what God was revealing.

This is why it is helpful to occupy the mind with godly things, such as scripture, worship, or images that boost your faith while praying in tongues.

Receiving revelations

If you desire to receive something from the spiritual realm, whether it’s an instruction, guidance, or revelation, you need strong focus.

Revelation often comes in the form of thoughts, so always ensure that your mind is ready to receive the revelation to avoid brushing it off as your own thoughts.

Many of the messages I have received from the Lord came as thoughts that appeared in my mind while I was praying in tongues.

At first, it can be difficult to distinguish between your own thoughts and thoughts from God. But one simple test the Holy Spirit taught me was to examine if the thoughts are from God or from the devil.

If the thought is consistent with Scripture and it comes while sincerely praying in tongues, it is very likely that it is from the Lord.

Sometimes, believers are not sure whether they heard from God or not. This is mostly because they have allowed the devil to flood their minds with carnal thoughts during prayer, countering the messages God has deposited in their spirit.

God is actually more willing to speak to us than we sometimes imagine. Often, the problem is not that God is silent, but that people either do not pay attention or doubt what He is saying.

Intense moments of focus

Another important thing to understand is that deep focus is difficult to sustain for long periods of time.

There were times when I prayed in tongues, desiring to hear from God concerning certain matters, but heard nothing at first. However, after praying for a while, I would suddenly experience a surge of intense tongues coupled with deep focus.

Interestingly, these intense moments usually lasted only about one or two minutes. After that, the revelations I had been seeking would begin flowing into my mind.

Then things would return to normal again.

This taught me that deep spiritual focus often comes in short intervals.

I also learned that the times when tongues feel dry and God seems silent are not wasted moments. They are often the preparation stage the Holy Spirit uses to bring us into those moments of deeper focus and revelation.

Long prayer sessions

If someone prays in tongues for two, three, or even four hours, it is unlikely that they will remain intensely focused the entire time.

Usually, I advise people to first focus on yielding to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will then lead them into short intervals of intense and focused tongues for a few minutes, during which they receive divine messages before returning to normal tongues.

Record what God reveals

The final thing to remember is to write down or record what God reveals to you.

After prayer, your faith level often drops slightly, and the enemy may try to introduce doubts about what you received.

For this reason, it is wise to record revelations immediately and act on them quickly. If the Lord gives you a message for someone, write it down and share it without overanalyzing it.

The longer you delay, the more opportunity there is for doubt to creep in.

Summary

Focus is one of the key factors that helps us receive from the Lord while praying in tongues. Many of the deepest spiritual experiences come during those brief moments of intense focus.

So remain patient, continue praying, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you through both the quiet and the powerful moments.

I hope this has been helpful. God bless you.
