When you understand how seriously prayer is needed in our lives, you will never skip praying in tongues again. Prayer is so crucial in our lives, and it has no alternative.
Here is what I’ve observed: for some believers, prayer is just one of many options they have for solving problems. They take it up and drop it based on the circumstances in their lives.
This attitude is one of the main reasons why praying in tongues feels dry and boring. The lack of intimacy doesn’t help at all.
Today, I’m going to share with you a powerful lesson that will challenge you to take praying in tongues much more seriously than you ever have. I hope to turn around your attitude towards praying in tongues, in case you are among the people who take it casually.
I’ve been praying in tongues for a long time, and I have seen great transformation in my life by exercising this gift. I’m putting in effort to encourage you because I know this is important for you.
Ready to learn?
Let’s get started.
The Problem
I’ll start by explaining the underlying issue that makes believers take praying in tongues casually. It is only after you understand the problem that you will be able to receive the solution.
Here is how the cycle works for most believers who are affected. A believer goes to a fellowship. In the fellowship, they are told God is the answer to all the problems in their lives.
They believe the message and ask the crucial question, “How do I get God to solve my problems?” That’s when they are told they need to pray to God.
When they try prayer, they realize that formulating a prayer is not easy. But then, by chance, they learn there is something called speaking in tongues.
They are told that speaking in tongues is the perfect way to pray. They then ask for the gift and receive it.
However, nobody emphasizes to them the seriousness of prayer. No one sits them down to tell them that prayer is more than just a tool to get the problems in their lives solved.
As a result, the believer starts praying only with the intention of having their problems solved. That expectation quickly hits a wall because the believer is missing the bigger picture.
Before long, the motivation to pray disappears. Prayers start to feel very dry and boring. Even the gift of tongues doesn’t seem to help at that point.
Then everything accumulates until the believer asks, “Does prayer really work?”
Well, I’m here to help you in case you are that kind of believer.
Context
Let’s start by reading a few scriptures that will help you understand the powerful lesson.
First scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:17. The Bible says…
pray without ceasing
Second scripture: Matthew 26:40-41. This is what the Bible says…
Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
The last scripture I want you to take note of is from 1 Peter 5:8. This is what the Bible says…
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
These three scriptures combine to teach us a very powerful lesson about prayer.
Eager to hear the powerful lesson?
Let’s dive in.
The Lesson
The Bible starts off by asking us to pray without ceasing. This means that regardless of the circumstances in your life, you are commanded to pray.
This is a more balanced perspective of prayer than just being told prayer is a tool to solve problems.
But how exactly are we supposed to pray without ceasing?
Well, praying is not easy. But the Lord sent the Holy Spirit to help us in our weaknesses. The Holy Spirit brought us the gift of praying in tongues to help us pray without ceasing.
This means that when you pray in tongues, you are not only seeking to have your issues solved, but also fulfilling a direct command from the Lord.
The Bible then reminds us of the words of Jesus that we ought to pray lest we fall into temptation. Since all sin comes after we are tempted, this makes prayer very important.
By praying, you avoid temptations that eventually lead many to sin.
But again, praying is not easy. Jesus Himself confirmed that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. That is where the Holy Spirit steps in with praying in tongues.
When you rely on the Holy Spirit, He eases prayer for you, which helps you avoid temptations.
Lastly, we are urged to be sober and vigilant because our adversary, the devil, roams around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may destroy.
Can you stay vigilant in the spirit without prayer? What even is vigilance without prayer?
This tells us that we are constantly in a spiritual battle and have to stay alert at all times. This is difficult work unless we are helped by the Holy Spirit.
By praying in tongues, the Holy Spirit keeps you vigilant at all times.
Finally Brethren…
I want you to understand that there are greater reasons for you to pray in tongues apart from merely having your physical problems solved.
With this wider perspective of praying in tongues in mind, you will be in a better position to pray even when it feels hard.
Let’s be strong soldiers and not weak babies. Our lives depend on the prayers we make. It’s more serious than we can ever imagine.
