Why Do I Feel Nauseated when Praying in Tongues for Long?

Recently, a believer shared with me about feeling nauseous when praying in tongues for a prolonged period. They were genuinely concerned and wanted to determine whether it’s normal for them to have such an experience or if it’s a tactic from the enemy to stop them from praying in tongues for long.

Well, this phenomenon is quite common and typically occurs when you begin to lose physical control and become more immersed in the spiritual realm.

When praying in tongues, we often experience a profound spiritual connection that transcends the physical realm. This heightened spiritual sensitivity can sometimes manifest in physical sensations such as nausea and general body discomfort.

It’s important to recognize that these sensations are not necessarily an indication of a negative spiritual influence but rather a sign of the powerful spiritual engagement taking place through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Our sense of control is rooted in our physical body. When we shift towards the spiritual realm through prayer, we may feel a sense of losing physical control.

The discomfort or nausea experienced during praying in tongues is as a result of the intense spiritual energy, so much that your physical body struggles to keep up. As a result, you may feel as if you are losing control.

This feeling can be scary especially if it’s unfamiliar. In some instances, believers even stop praying in tongues due to the overwhelming nature of this experience.

As you prepare for spiritual encounters, you may also experience a similar sense of unease, feeling somewhat overwhelmed or even physically weak. At times, this uneasiness may manifest as trembling or a sick feeling in the stomach.

While going through these unsettling sensations, you may find yourself losing complete control in the physical realm; but in the spiritual realm, you are in the safe hands of the Holy Spirit and there is no need to worry.

It’s crucial for believers experiencing these sensations to remain grounded in faith and trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Rather than interpreting physical discomfort as a negative sign, it should be seen as a confirmation of the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible encourages us to pray without ceasing and to allow the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

The next time you feel nauseated during praying in tongues, recognize it as a natural response to deep spiritual engagement. Simply give way to the Holy Spirit and enjoy the deep communion with God. Blessings!
