Why Praying in Tongues while Fasting is Powerful

As believers, we pray for different reasons. Sometimes it’s simply to worship God, and other times we really need God to do something for us.

Most of the time, we associate fasting with asking God for something or making a specific request, which does happen often.

However, fasting is actually a tool God has given us to intensify the prayers we make. In this article, I will highlight two ways fasting empowers the tongues we speak. Let’s get started…

1. Spiritual alignment

First, fasting helps us remain focused. As human beings, there are so many things competing for our attention. There are countless things to do other than praying, and God understands this.

He also considers how much time we give to prayer, because that reflects the priority it has in our lives.

The importance we give to prayer says a lot about our faith. If someone barely prays but suddenly turns to God only when they need something, God may want to see how much they actually value prayer.

This also reveals the extent to which they trust God to answer their prayers.

This is why people who have a habit of praying daily have an advantage. In God’s eyes, they are already established as people of faith, who rely heavily on Him. When challenges arise, it’s easier for them to receive answers because they are already used to depending on God.

On the other hand, when someone only turns to prayer after everything else has failed, God may test their commitment. He wants to see whether prayer has truly become their priority, above the things they once trusted.

One way to show God that you truly believe in the power of your prayers is by incorporating fasting.

Think about this: two of the most basic things humans do daily are eating and sleeping. We never get tired of either.

So, when you deny yourself food or even sleep, it deeply touches God’s heart. He knows how essential these things are to us.

That’s why fasting and night vigils are so powerful. When you sacrifice sleep to pray, God values that prayer greatly. It becomes a sweet sacrifice to Him, much like the sacrifices offered in the Old Testament.

Scripture tells us in the book of Revelation 5:8 that the prayers of the saints rise before God as a sweet aroma.

When you combine praying in tongues with sacrifice, either through fasting or denying yourself sleep, that aroma becomes even more pleasing. And because it pleases God, He is more willing to respond to your requests.

2. Strengthening of the spirit

The second way fasting helps is by empowering the spirit.

When you fast, you deny the desires of the flesh and give priority to your spirit. Spiritually speaking, this raises your spiritual rank, granting you more authority.

In the spiritual realm, there is constant contention between the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness. The stronger you are spiritually, the more battles you can win.

In the book of Galatians 5:17, the Bible tells us that the desires of the flesh are contrary to the desires of the spirit. When the flesh is strong, the spirit struggles. Much of the spirit’s energy is spent fighting the flesh, leaving little strength for spiritual warfare.

But when you fast, you suppress the flesh. This makes it easier for your spirit to overcome fleshly desires. As a result, when you engage in prayer, your spirit is strong and energized.

This is why, during fasting, you may feel physically weak but spiritually powerful.

Personally, when I fast, there are times I can’t even stand to pray. I may need to sit or kneel because my body feels weak.

Yet I’ve noticed that even the gentle tongues I speak during fasting carry more power than the tongues I speak when I’m physically strong.

Now, it’s important to understand that you may not feel this power immediately when you begin fasting. In the first day or two, your flesh is still adjusting because it’s used to being fed regularly.

That’s why the spiritual sensitivity and power often become more noticeable after the second or third day, once the flesh has been subdued and the spirit has been strengthened through prayer.

Summary

This explains why fasting is such a precious practice for anyone who prays in tongues. If you want to grow in praying in tongues and greatly benefit from it, try incorporating fasting.

This is also why fasting should be practiced regularly. One long fast can help, but it’s consistency that trains your spirit to dominate the flesh. When fasting becomes part of your lifestyle, alongside prayer, you grow spiritually stronger over time.

As you become better at subduing the flesh, it becomes easier to enter the spiritual realm. And when you do, you’ll find yourself operating with greater power, which will undoubtedly manifest in your physical life.

So, if you haven’t been fasting while praying in tongues, I encourage you to do so. Allow your tongues to be accompanied by greater spiritual power, and you will see things shift and align in your life.

God bless you.
