Some time back, someone asked me if there is a significant difference between praying in tongues for one hour versus three hours.
The simple answer is yes. Most of these differences are spiritual in nature.
I will walk you through some of those differences between praying in tongues for one hour and praying in tongues for three hours or longer.
Before I get any further, I must state that there is no law that says you must pray in tongues for three hours. The purpose of this article is to encourage you to dedicate more time to prayer to experience deeper spiritual realities.
Personal Experience
I’ll begin by sharing my personal experience as I explain the difference between praying in tongues for 1 hour and 3 hours.
When I just received the gift of praying in tongues, the tongues were not fluent. Many times, I had to push myself just to pray, and honestly, it wasn’t very enjoyable at the beginning.
At that time, I also had doubts. I wasn’t sure whether the tongues I was speaking were real or whether I was just making things up.
Naturally, as human beings, we want some kind of sign or feeling to confirm that something is truly from God. So, I made a genuine prayer and told God that if the tongues were not from Him, He should alert me and I would stop.
The prayer was met with silence, so I continued to pray in tongues.
Several months later, the Lord confirmed that the tongues I was speaking were real by sending someone to interpret some of them. That moment changed everything for me.
Before that confirmation, I would only pray in tongues for about 20 to 30 minutes at most. But on the day I received that confirmation, I was so excited that I prayed in tongues for almost three hours straight.
After that, I began praying in tongues for about an hour every morning, until it became a routine.
One day, a thought crossed my mind: What would happen if I prayed in tongues for more than one hour? I then decided to give it a try.
There was a church near where I lived that allowed people in to pray during the day, even if they weren’t members. One afternoon around 2:00 p.m., I went there and began praying in tongues.
At around 4:30 p.m., about two and a half hours in, I became very dizzy and sleepy and eventually fell asleep. When I woke up, it was around 5:30 p.m., and I continued praying until about 7:00 p.m.
That day marked the first time I truly experienced the power of extended prayer in tongues.
I experienced a level of peace I had never felt before. Something so deep and so sweet that I can’t fully describe it. I knew without a doubt that it was the work of the Lord. There was no way I could have experienced that kind of peace without spending that much time praying in tongues.
From that point on, I made it a priority to pray in tongues for as long as I could.
Over time, I began noticing clear distinctions between praying in tongues for one hour and praying for longer than an hour. Below are some of the differences.
1. Overcoming Resistance
When you pray in tongues longer, you gain more power to overcome resistance from the enemy.
Prayer is fellowship with God, and praying in tongues is communion with the Holy Spirit; and so the enemy definitely does not want us to pray.
Because of this, the enemy uses distractions such as a wandering mind, carnal thoughts, memories, or even interruptions from people.
If you’ve ever tried to pray and suddenly found your mind flooded with unpleasant or distracting thoughts, that’s not accidental. The enemy is trying to pull your focus.
When you only pray for an hour or less, much of that time can be spent fighting distractions. But when you pray longer, you give yourself enough time to push past those distractions and actually enter into a flow of prayer.
That’s why I often encourage people to treat the first 30 minutes as a kind of “warm-up”. By the time you move deeper, many of those distractions have already died down.
2. Purification
As we go about daily life, we naturally pick up defilement through thoughts, interactions, and experiences. When you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit begins to purify your mind and heart.
This purification is a process, and it takes time. If you only pray for a short period, the Holy Spirit may not have enough time to deal with deeper strongholds.
But when you pray longer, you give Him room to cleanse you more thoroughly, allowing you to experience deeper peace, joy, and closeness with God.
On that day when I prayed longer than an hour, I experienced a level of purity and peace I had never known before and I know it was because I gave the Holy Spirit more time to work.
3. Length of impact
When you pray in tongues for one hour, you may feel peace and joy afterward, but it often fades after a few hours.
When you pray for longer, that heavenly peace and presence stay with you much longer, sometimes even into the next day.
I noticed that the longer I prayed, the longer I carried that sense of God’s presence. And because of that, daily distractions and defilement didn’t affect me as much. Also in this state, the attacks of the enemy were rendered powerless because of the divine fire around me.
A prolonged heavenly atmosphere is certainly one of the most beautiful experiences a believer can have.
Summary
If you’ve been praying in tongues for an hour or less, I highly recommend extending your prayer time for as long as possible. As you do, you’ll notice more breakthroughs, deeper peace, and a greater relationship with God.
God bless you.
