This is a problem I have encountered firsthand. I’ve spent a lot of time praying in tongues. In the process, I’ve felt sleepy countless times. Many of those times I fell asleep and stopped praying in tongues. When I woke up, I felt so bad about it.

But by the grace of God, I learnt a secret that helped me deal with sleepiness when praying in tongues. Nowadays, I rarely ever struggle with sleep when praying in tongues.

Ready to learn? Let’s dive in!

The Problem

Falling asleep when praying in tongues has an origin. I want to explain that origin to you before I give you the solution. Once you understand where the problem originates, you will be in a good position to solve it.

Here is what happens: a praying-in-tongues believer decides to pray in tongues. In his mind, he knows it is a good thing to do.

He sets time for it and starts praying. The tongues start off a bit dry, but he pushes through. He understands that sometimes speaking in tongues may feel dry.

However, about 15 minutes into praying in tongues, he starts yawning. At first, the yawns are few and far between. However, with time, the yawns become frequent.

Before the believer realizes it, he finds himself involuntarily pausing tongues. He also notices that his eyes are heavy with sleep.

He then chooses to pray with his eyes open to avoid falling asleep. That doesn’t last long. He quickly closes his eyes and falls asleep.

He then hears a voice telling him, “Why don’t you just sleep then wake up when you are fresh to pray in tongues?”

Without giving it a second thought, the believer quits praying in tongues and chooses to sleep.

If you are that kind of believer, you really need the information I am about to share.

Context

Before I explain the revelation that will make you pray in tongues without falling asleep, let’s start by getting some context. Pay attention to the following scriptures; they will help you understand the solution better.

First scripture: Matthew 26:40-41. The Bible says…

Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The second important scripture in this context is from the book of Galatians 5:16-17. It says…

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

The last scripture I want you to pay attention to in this context is James 3:2. The Bible says…

For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

These three scriptures hide a powerful secret that will make you stop falling asleep when praying in tongues.

Do you have a clue what the secret is?

Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything.

The Secret

In Matthew 26:40-41, Jesus found his disciples sleeping instead of praying. As expected, he was disappointed that they chose to sleep instead of praying. Until that point, it should be clear that Jesus is disappointed whenever His disciples choose to sleep when it is time for prayer.

Since we are disciples of Jesus, this applies to us. This also means that if you keep falling asleep while praying, you need to overcome it.

But that scripture doesn’t end there. Jesus concludes with a very interesting phrase. He said, “The Spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak”.

This means that our spirits are always eager to pray, but the flesh prefers to sleep.

This brings me to the second scripture we read: Galatians 5:16-17.

In that scripture, the Bible confirms to us that the desires of the flesh are contrary to the desires of the spirit. And as a result, we are tempted to do things that we do not wish to do.

In this context, we understand that no praying-in-tongues believer goes to pray in tongues hoping to fall asleep. It is something that occurs against their will, and somehow, they find it difficult to resist it.

Now that we know the problem originates from the flesh and Jesus doesn’t like it when we fall asleep during the time of prayer, what are we supposed to do?

Well, that is where the last verse in James 3:2 comes in.

That scripture tells us that we stumble in many things, including falling asleep while praying in tongues, of course!

But then it takes a wild turn and tells us that if someone can control his tongue, he can control his entire body.

It’s a very powerful conclusion, but not random.

You see, we use our tongues to speak. What we speak becomes law in the spiritual realm. Then, spirits in the spiritual realm treat us according to the laws we’ve set.

If we control our tongues, by extension, we control the laws we set for ourselves in the spiritual realm. With favorable laws in the spiritual realm, it becomes easy for us to walk according to the ways of the spirit.

In simple terms, we need to control our tongues, which will enable us to control our bodies and be able to resist the desires of the flesh, including falling asleep when praying in tongues.

If you struggle with falling asleep when praying in tongues, use your tongue to make affirmations that will open spiritual doors for you so that your praying in tongues experience becomes sweet. With an exciting praying in tongues experience, you will never feel sleepy while praying.
