How to Know if you are Really Speaking in Tongues

You will know you are really speaking in tongues when you have the fruit of the Spirit, you speak words that cannot be understood in human languages and you desired the gift of speaking in tongues. The fruit of the Spirit proves that it is the Holy Spirit who is enabling you to speak in tongues, and words that cannot be understood in human language prove that it is the Holy Spirit speaking through you.

I received the gift of speaking in tongues and it took me six months to finally get a confirmation that what I was speaking was actually the gift of speaking in tongues.

It doesn’t mean that for the first six months after receiving the gift I didn’t exercise it but I had doubts about it every so often.

In this article, I will walk you through the steps you need to take to know if you are really speaking in tongues.

Why People Doubt if they are Speaking in Tongues

Before you know how to prove that you are actually speaking in tongues, it is important to know where doubts about the gift come from.

Doubts come from the devil. The devil knows how powerful speaking in tongues is. As part of his mission, he plants doubts in the hearts of people so that they may give up pursuing the gift of praying in tongues.

The doubts about speaking in tongues are planted in form of questions. The devil whispers “Are you not guessing these words? Shouldn’t speaking in tongues be involuntary?”

The more a person pays attention to the whispers of the devil, the more doubts they have about speaking in tongues.

God permits the devil to whisper these questions to some believers as a way to test the faith of the believers in the gift of speaking in tongues.

It happened to me also; I am not speaking things I have not experienced.

The only way to overcome the temptations of the evil one is to focus on the word of God. No matter what questions arise, assure yourself that you are pure in the heart and have no ill motives by desiring to speak in tongues.

There were times I got whispers from the enemy that I was faking the gift. In my heart, I knew I had no intentions to fake the gift. With no intentions, there was no way I would fake it.

That is how I countered the doubts of the enemy.

How to know you are Really Speaking in Tongues

1. When the Fruit of the Spirit is in you

Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The very first indicator that you have the Holy Spirit is if you bear the fruit of the Spirit.

The fruit of the Spirit usually comes out first before the gifts. The fruit is more important than the gifts.

If you have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control, you can confidently speak in tongues.

Apostle Paul echoed this message in 1^st Corinthians 13 that if he had the ability to speak in the tongues of men and angels but didn’t have love, he would be nothing more than a resounding gong.

There are believers who speak in tongues but because they do not have the fruit of the Holy Spirit, their tongues are empty.

As a way to really know that you are speaking in tongues, work on living a life that has the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

2. When you have Groans that are too deep for Words

The word of God tells us in the book of Romans 8:26 that we do not know how to pray as we ought to but that the Spirit prays in us with groans that are too deep for words.

Speaking in tongues is basically letting the Holy Spirit pray through you. Since the Holy Spirit understands the mind of God, He knows what to ask for through you.

Speaking in tongues can take many different forms. Sometimes speaking in tongues is not speaking but groans. Other times someone may only be screaming.

I have also seen people who were laughing hysterically under the influence of the Holy Spirit. All these different forms of manifestation happen based on what the Holy Spirit knows is the right thing to do.

All a believer has to do is give Him access.

To know that you are really speaking in tongues, you will experience any of the above manifestations. Don’t fix your mind that speaking in tongues should be in a certain way. Anything can happen and that is how you know that it is the Spirit of God leading you.

3. If you desired the gift

The gift of speaking in tongues is given to believers who desire it. If you desired the gift and asked for it from God, don’t doubt it when He gives it to you.

There is no way you will desire the gift of speaking in tongues and you receive something fake. A genuine desire for the gift prompts God to give out the gift.

God’s desire that believers have the gift of praying in tongues is stronger than the desire of believers to have the gift. This is why anyone who desires the gift receives it.

You should only doubt if you are speaking in tongues and you didn’t desire the gift. There are some believers who desired the gift but didn’t ask for it but still God gave it to them.

Other believers never intentionally desire the gift but just because they were receptive to God, they received the gift.

In simple terms, if you are in a good relationship with God, there is no reason for you not to have the gift of speaking in tongues.

In fact, there are believers who have the gift but they don’t know. Some have it but don’t exercise it.

The hard part is not receiving the gift but rather exercising it.

Knowing you are Praying in Tongues Conclusion

The fact that you were seeking to know if you are really speaking in tongues already shows that you value genuine speaking of tongues.

The purity of your heart goes to show that what you have received is actually the gift of speaking in tongues.

You may have had doubts about it but that is often the case when you are new to speaking in tongues. Blocking out the whispers of the devil and exercising whatever few syllables you have received will help you grow in the gift of speaking in tongues.
