How to Pray for Protection

Because we live in a world full of dangers, we need to learn to pray for protection from God. We should not be like the people of the world who put their trust in man-made security systems. God has His own security system that we can rely on.

The protection system that God provides is perfect in every way; it protects us from both physical and spiritual dangers.

How exactly should we pray for protection?

There different approaches depending on the spiritual level you operate from. I’ll cover them so that you pick the one that suits you the most.

Methods of Praying to God for Protection

1. Praying for Protection according to Psalms 59

In Psalms 59:1-2, the Bible says: Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend me from those who rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, And save me from bloodthirsty men.

This is a powerful prayer for protection from King David. There are many instances in the book of Psalms where King David asks God to protect him.

You can recite these psalms and God will accept them as prayer for protection. God will deliver you from your enemies and those who seek to destroy you.

God saved King David many times from his enemies who sought to kill him. It is this type of prayers that prompted God to protect King David. If you also want the same protection, use the same scriptures to pray.

When you make these prayers, you will be fulfilling God’s command of leaving vengeance to Him. David was a King and we know that Kings had armies that were supposed to protect them.

Despite his able army, King David chose to ask God to protect him. This move by King David was pleasing to God.

Likewise, we should rely on God for protection even if we have human security systems.

2. Praying for Protection according to Psalms 91:14-16

Psalms 91:14-16 says: “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

This is a powerful prayer for protection because God Himself vows to protect anyone who loves Him. This is a covenant prayer that you make with God and He protects you.

Your duty in the covenant is to love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. In return, God will rescue you when you are in trouble and protect you in times of danger.

The dangers that surround us are too many for us to number. This approach is good in the sense that you don’t have to actively pray for each of the danger you face.

God Himself will assess the dangers that are in your environment and automatically protect you. He protects those He loves for His name’s sake. God understands that if people who love Him become victims of the dangers in this world, many will lose faith in Him claiming that He is not powerful enough to protect His own people.

For this reason, working to love the Lord your God with all your heart is a powerful strategy to get protection from God. You can pray for God to teach you to love Him and with it you will get automatic protection as a bonus.

3. Praying for Protection according to Proverbs 16:7

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 16:7 that when a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

When your ways are pleasing to the Lord, God will protect you by making your enemies to be at peace with you. This approach of praying for protection is similar to the previous one with the only difference being the prompt.

In the previous strategy, God protects you because you love Him. In this one, God makes your enemies to be at peace with you because your ways are pleasing to Him.

You may ask yourself, what do I do to make my ways pleasing to the Lord?

Have faith!

The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:6 that it is impossible to please the Lord without faith. Faith is the gift that enables us to please the Lord.

We know that God was pleased with our father Abraham because Abraham had faith. Abraham lived life doing usual human activities but his faith made those activities pleasing to God.

In the new dispensation, the Holy Spirit is our guide. He offers us the gift of faith which automatically makes our actions pleasing to God.

Instead of praying directly for protection, you can pray for God to give you the gift of faith so that your ways become pleasing to Him and in return He will make your enemies to be at peace with you.

4. Praying in Tongues for Protection

An even easier way to pray for protection is to pray in tongues. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans that are too deep for words as we are told in Romans 8:26.

The Holy Spirit understands our need for protection more than we do. Because He lives in us, He knows our vulnerability and He intercedes for us when we pray in tongues.

This is an efficient strategy to use when praying for protection because you never have to know the dangers that are around you. The Holy Spirit knows them and will automatically intercede for you.

Sometimes He will even prompt you to pray in tongues when He sees danger coming. Not only does He warn you of dangers but He also prompts you to pray and He helps you pray.

Jesus understood our struggle in prayer and that is why He requested the Father to send the Holy Spirit to help us through praying in tongues.

When you heed to the guidance of the Holy Spirit to pray in tongues, you will be guaranteed safety all the days of your life.

The Protection of God is perfect

When God protects you, He not only protects your physical body but also everything that bears your name. Your children will automatically be protected by God because they bear your name.

Your property too will be protected by God when you pray for protection.

I hope you remember the story of Job in the Bible. The devil told God that he could not attack Job because God had put a hedge of protection around him and his household.

God was protecting Job who was blameless and upright but that protection went as far as protecting his animals.

On the day God withdrew His protection, the devil attacked everything that Job had including demolishing his houses. With God’s protection, the devil could not even touch Job’s physical houses.

This means that once you pray for God’s protection, you don’t have to pray for the protection of your property and family because God automatically includes it in the package.

I hope you are now motivated to pray for protection.

Until next time…Peace!
