How to Receive the Gift of Speaking in Tongues

To receive the gift of speaking in tongues, go on your knees, lift up your hands and tell God to baptize you with the Holy Spirit and enable you to speak in tongues. God is faithful and willing to let you receive the gift of speaking in tongues when you ask Him. This simple prayer will cause you to receive the gift of speaking in tongues.

However, receiving the gift of speaking in tongues can be challenging even though it doesn’t take human effort. If you find it hard to start speaking in tongues, you will need to build your relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Some believers receive the gift effortlessly while others put in sweat, blood and tears but still don’t get the gift. What on earth is up with this gift!? Why is it this way?

In this article, I will explain to you why receiving the gift of speaking in tongues is easy for some people and how you to put yourself in a good position to receive it.

Why Receiving the Gift of Speaking in Tongues is Easy for Some People

Receiving the gift of speaking in tongues has many aspects to it but they are all summed up in one thing; an individual’s relationship with the Holy Spirit.

You can never receive a gift from someone you don’t have a relationship with, can you? If you get a gift from a stranger, it is called a trap.

The same is true with receiving gifts of the Holy Spirit. If you don’t have a relationship with the Holy Spirit, forget about receiving gifts from Him.

For people who easily receive the gift of speaking in tongues, they have a strong relationship with the Holy Spirit.

The pillar of a strong relationship with the Holy Spirit is faith. The greater the faith you have in God, the stronger your relationship with the Holy Spirit will be.

And from the word of God we know that faith comes from knowledge or in biblical terms ‘Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word’.

This means that someone who has invested time in reading the word stands a better chance of receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit than one who has barely read the word.

The word of God builds our understanding. The more the word of God someone knows, the easier it is for the person to understand the workings of the Holy Spirit.

With greater understanding of the Holy Spirit, it becomes easy to receive the gift of speaking in tongues.

Those believers who seemingly get gifts from the Holy Spirit effortlessly usually have a good understanding which makes their faith strong.

The exception to this rule is with children; there are children who get the gifts of the Holy Spirit when adults are struggling.

With children, their strength is usually innocence although in most cases covenants play a bigger role. Take the example of John the Baptist; the Bible tells us that he was filled with the Holy Spirit while still in the womb.

Why?

Because John the Baptist was in a covenant. Prophet Isaiah had already spoken about John the Baptist being the one who would prepare the way for the messiah.

The work of preparing the way for the messiah could only be done by someone who was filled with the Holy Spirit.

God had to make sure that He had access to John the Baptist as early as possible so that his mission would not be aborted.

Children born to parents who have made covenants with God about their children can get the gift of speaking in tongues even before they know what it is.

How to Receive the Gift of Speaking in Tongues

1. Grow in Love

The gift of speaking in tongues is important but there are more important matters in the kingdom of God. Just to mention one, Apostle Paul said that it would be pointless for him is he could speak in the tongues of men and angels but didn’t have love.

From Paul’s example we learn that love is more important than speaking in tongues. With this being the case, God will usually withhold the gift of speaking in tongues until a believer has matured in the most important aspects of salvation.

Receiving the gift of speaking in tongues may fool someone that he is in a good relationship with God if the person doesn’t have a solid foundation.

As a result, the person will become self-righteous and force God to reject him. But since God loves us, He would rather withhold the gift of speaking in tongues from us to prevent us from being self-righteous than to let us become self-righteous.

Therefore, the first step if you want to receive the gift of speaking in tongues is to grow in love. Ask God to teach you to love Him and others.

2. Build your Prayer Life

Speaking in tongues is a gift that makes praying easier. If you are invested in prayer, it makes sense for you to receive the gift to make praying easier for you.

But if you are not invested in prayer, why do you need speaking in tongues? Weapons of war are given to soldiers going to war.

Do your best with what God has given you. Pray with understanding to your level best. Have the mindset of ‘Even if I don’t get the gift of speaking in tongues, I will still pray fervently’.

There are testimonies of believers who began speaking in tongues when they launched deep into prayer in understanding.

If God sees you going deep in prayer in understanding and you need a boost, He will give you the gift of speaking in tongues.

3. Ask for the Gift

For some believers, receiving the gift of speaking in tongues only happens after they ask for it. If you have grown in love and you have a healthy prayer life and you feel you need the gift of speaking in tongues, ask for it.

The Bible tells us that we do not receive because we do not ask. Jesus told us to ask and we will receive, seek and we will find, knock and the door shall be opened to us.

The good thing with asking for the gift of speaking in tongues is that if you are not eligible to have it, God will help you grow to a level where you can receive the gift.

In fact, if you ask for the gift of speaking in tongues and don’t receive it, the wise thing to do is ask God to show you areas you need to grow in.

Once you know what areas are holding you back from receiving the gift of speaking in tongues, it becomes easier to work on them and get the gift.
