How to Pray for Forgiveness after Abortion

Praying for forgiveness after abortion is a good move. Abortion is a sin that requires you to repent. God offers forgiveness to anyone who humbles himself.

In this article, I have included a prayer for forgiveness after abortion. But before you recite the prayer, I want to help you understand the sin of abortion.

Understanding the Sin of Abortion before you pray for Forgiveness

Abortion is a sin for the simple reason that you are shedding blood of an innocent soul. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 6:17 that God hates hands that shed innocent blood.

Unborn babies have souls and they are innocent; they have done no wrong to deserve death. Because of this, God gets angry at women who abort and men who approve it.

When it comes to paying for the sin of abortion, God applies grace. According to the justice system of God, if you take a life your life will also be taken. If you shed the blood of another, your blood will also be shed.

But because of the grace of God, after an abortion, God gives you time to repent of your sin. If you repent, God will use the blood of Jesus to repay the innocent blood you shed but if you don’t repent, God will demand your own blood.

There are situations where God inflicts justice after an abortion by closing the womb of the woman. If the woman aborted, it means she doesn’t want children and God gives her what she wants by closing her womb.

Most importantly, God considers the intention behind the act of abortion. If a woman is forced to abort or tricked into aborting, God will have mercy on the woman. He is a merciful God.

If a woman aborts because of having conceived accidentally, God will be angry because the woman did a foolish thing. God tells us in His word that if we don’t have wisdom we should ask for it from Him. That is why our foolishness angers God.

The woman who aborts, the man who approves it and the health practitioner who helps in the abortion are all guilty before God. There is no excuse for shedding innocent blood.

In another way, the sin of abortion is a sin of lacking faith. We know that children are a blessing from God. When God gives you a baby, He also provides the needs of that baby.

Women who abort in the name of financial constraints are basically showing their lack of faith in God to provide for the child He has given them. The Israelites angered God in the wilderness when they doubted His ability to provide for them.

That is the same anger that God experiences when a woman aborts a baby for financial reasons. It is better to give birth to a baby and have the baby die of starvation than abort the baby.

How to Pray for Forgiveness after Abortion

1. Confess your sin of Abortion to God

Repentance for the sin of abortion starts by confessing your wrongdoing to God. This is what the Bible says in 1st John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

The Bible emphasizes confession of sins in proverbs 28:13. This is what it says: Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

Confessing your sin will prompt God to have mercy on you. You need mercy because you have no way of paying for the innocent blood you shed.

The blood of Jesus will atone for you only if you humble yourself and confess your sin. The blood of Jesus belongs to Jesus and He has to approve your plea for His blood to atone for your sin.

Jesus is humble and loving. If you plead for His blood, He will give it as atonement for your sin.

2. Ask for Forgiveness

After you have acknowledged your sin of abortion, pray that God may forgive you. Forgiveness is a gift from God. If you want it, you have to ask for it.

God does not forgive automatically; you have to ask Him to forgive you. He is a loving God but He only forgives when He is asked.

The forgiveness of God also helps you forgive yourself. When God has forgiven you, it will be easy for you to find forgiveness for yourself. It will take a bit of time but you will eventually heal.

The anger towards yourself that you feel after an abortion will linger for a while even after God forgives you. God allows it to test you and see if you have believed He has forgiven you. The anger towards yourself is also a mark that permanently scares you from repeating the sin you repented of.

Your responsibility is to make sure the anger you have against yourself for aborting does not turn into guilt. Remember that you are no longer guilty after God forgives you.

Allow the anger to dwell for a while because you deserve it anyway. When God has proven that you are indeed serious with your repentance, He will take away the anger and you will be perfectly fine.

3. Thank God for Forgiveness after Abortion

God never demands that we thank Him but when we do it pleases Him. Forgiveness is a gift and it is wise to thank God after you receive it.

Thanksgiving seals the forgiveness God has given you. When the devil brings doubts against the forgiveness you prayed for, thanksgiving will be a witness against his evil schemes.

The fact that you thanked God already shows that you received forgiveness. Thanksgiving is only possible after you receive a gift.

Therefore, make sure you thank God after you pray for forgiveness after abortion.

Lord Jesus, let your blood atone for the innocent blood I shed. I have no hope except through your blood. I plead today for your innocent blood to ask for mercy for me before the Father. Help me Lord!
